Mugs ‘N Mittens Cat Cafe is owned and operated by lifelong residents of Marion County, Morgan and Keith, who opened the cafe in 2023 a few months after their summer wedding. Morgan was a barista, daycare teacher, and an elementary education undergraduate at Fairmont State before going full-time with the business. Keith works full-time in the blue-collar field, but steps in to help with financial decisions, cleaning, and other business decisions. The cafe is as much a monument of our love and teamwork as it is a community endeavor. We were inspired to open the cafe not just because of the stray cats running rampant in the area, but also because a member of a Fairmont Community Page on Facebook wished that there was a cat cafe nearby. Struck by inspiration, we got right to work to fulfill their wish and build a business together.
The Cafe Side of Things...
When you enter Mugs ‘N Mittens Cat Cafe, you enter through our cafe side. Here, you can purchase a drink or entry to the cat lounge. There are plenty of seats for those who don’t want to visit the cats. For health and food safety reasons, in accordance with local food safety laws and regulations, the cats must be kept completely separate from the cafe. You won’t be seeing any kitties in the cafe side… Unless Patchy makes one of his many escapes. But he’s not supposed to be out there!
Attached to the cafe side, there are two genderless restrooms and a gift shop. The gift shop features trinkets, collectibles, art, accessories, and even freeze-dried candy made by local small businesses. You can also shop for custom merch with the cafe kitties on it, which directly supports the cafe!
We are also so flattered by the amount of fan art we receive, so we hang that stuff up in the cafe as well.
The Cat Side of Things...
The cat lounge has an entry fee of $5 per person. There is no time limit and no age minimum, but children younger than 13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult (ages 18 and older) at all times. You can see all the cat lounge rules below, and they are posted next to the door to the cat lounge!
In the cat lounge, there are plenty of seating arrangements so you can get cozy, play with kitties, read a book, do some homework, or enjoy some of the complementary entertainment: puzzles, books, board games, fidget toys, and a Nintendo Switch with games like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart.
We have eight permanent kitties that live at the cafe full-time, and we foster adoptable cats for Marion County Humane Society and Doddridge County Humane Society. You can learn more about the cats living at the cafe and the adoptable foster kitties here.
Cat Lounge Rules
Cats are animals with claws and teeth. Watch their body language and respect their boundaries.
And most importantly… Have fun and make yourself at home! These rules are to keep you and our kitties safe, happy, and healthy. We’re here to bring comfort and joy to everyone in our community. Following these rules keeps everyone comfortable, cats and visitors alike. There’s no time limit (unless you count closing time) so snuggle in and relax!
